Wow! It is hard to believe that we are at the end of 2015. I want to thank everyone who made 2015 a success and we look forward to exciting 2016. Although the fly shop has only been going since April, we accomplished more than I could have imagined. We owe that all to you!
I can only hope that 2016 will be filled with good weather, great fishing, and great times! Our 2016 product will start arriving in January so stop in and check it out. We will get a movie schedule and tying schedule together for February.
We will be closing at 4pm today and we will be closed January 1 for New Years. We will reopen Saturday morning.

Thunderstorms in December? Well we are having one now. The rain has made its mark here again with flooding and road closures in the area. Lakes are well above capacity levels and streams are bursting at the seems.
We took a hike up Deep Creek yesterday evening and we seen someone trying to spinner fish. Not a safe move with current stream flows. The good news was how quick the water was clearing up. If we catch a break in the rain for a couple of days some streams will become fishable.
Until then watch some videos, tie some flies, get the gear ready because we will be able to hit the water soon.

I hope that everyone had a blessed Christmas! We certainly have been blessed with rain from this past system. I have measured a smidge over 6" in the rain gauge and as you can imagine the streams are impassable with flows reaching almost record levels. Area wide flooding has been an issue but I think that the worst is behind us.
It will be a few days before fishing will be an option. Remember that the smaller mountain streams will be the first ones that you can float a nymph or fly in. They will reach fishable levels the fastest then the tail waters will be the last. My concern are the lake levels that Duke Energy has been struggling with to keep at normal levels. This past rainfall will only compound that issue.
Feel free to contact the shop if you have any questions.

Hello everyone. We are in a rain pattern and it will continue the next few days. Expect above normal temps and some higher stream levels. I would seek out smaller streams in the area to fish.
The shop will be open regular hours until Christmas Eve and on Christmas Eve we will be open from 9-3, closed Christmas Day, and then reopen 12/26 regular hours.

We are mostly in the lower to mid 20's with highs reaching the 40's. Expect a warming trend with some rain in the coming week. Dress warm when it comes to fishing.
Go small with some Zebra Midges, Rainbow Warriors, Brassie, and other small nymphs. Dries will be less affective but they will still work. Small is the word.

The rain is back and much cooler temps are forecast for Friday and Saturday and then the warming trend starts. I did get out yesterday in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and it was a splendid day. It was hard to believe that it is December with weather more like spring. I observed many insects flying for this time of year. Still small bugs worked best.
It looks as though the Tuckasegee will continue flowing in the mid 600cfs range for now. If you are brave it is producing great fish. It is good floating conditions but wading can be a bit difficult with the current flow rates. I could not see the color this morning since is was dark when I past it but I would guess it will a bit off color due to the rain.
Check out some of the other streams on the Western North Carolina Fly Fishing Trail: Scott Creek, Caney Fork, Tanasee Creek, Panthertown Creek, Raven Fork, Whitewater River just to name a few. Options do exist and this a great variety of streams for everyone's likes.

Ten more days until Christmas and it is mild outside. We are still in a mild weather pattern and I had a chance to fish a bit this weekend. Many of you may have seen the Brook Trout video on our Facebook page that I landed and released this weekend. I took all of my fish on a #18 Gallop's Goober Midge.
Streams are clear and I was easing around the stream spotting fish and then casting to them. Many were hanging on the edges on the stream. My advice is to look before you step. Fish may be hanging in places you least expect it.
The stream flow is still high. Duke is scheduled to release water the next 3 days. Maybe we will get a break for this weekend but we are forecast for cold weather Saturday with another warming trend following.

The Tuckasegee River in Jackson County is flowing at 908cfs this morning and Duke Energy is releasing water until 11:59PM. This current flow rate should continue for the next couple of days. We do however have many other options available on the Western North Carolina Fly Fishing Trail. I would seek out a Caney Fork or Scotts Creek if I was not in the shop today. Both streams have been fishing well.

I hope everyone is well. It has been a bit crazy around here. We all seemed to get the stomach bug over the Thanksgiving Holiday and we recovered and it was show time in Asheville. I want to thank everyone who came by our booth this past weekend.
I want to focus on the rain and the mild temps that we are getting. We did receive 6" of rain at the house from the last system and as you could imagine the streams were bursting at the seams. Mother nature did a wonderful job of cleaning the streams and banks for us plus providing us with some ground water but some of the streams are still high. Tail waters like the Tuckasegee River on the WNC Fly Fishing Trail are running at 923cfs in Cullowhee, NC and 2590cfs in Bryson City, NC.
Duke is scheduled to release the next three days non-stop at this time.
I have to say that fishing is good right now especially in the smaller streams and the GSMNP. We took a hike Sunday afternoon trying out the GoPro Camera and we seen a good friend of ours and his young son catching trout on Deep Creek. The water is clear and the stream bed is clean.
I encourage you to take advantage of the weather if you can and when it is safe to hit the Tuckasegee River it will be an awesome fishery.

It looks like we are in a monsoon season versus a fall/winter season. Very high stream flows and standing water lead our report today. Scotts Creek is almost out of its bank, Tuckasegee River in Bryson City is flowing at 17,800cfs, and Cataloochee Creek in the GSMNP is flowing at 1610cfs. These are well above normal to say the least.
Stop by and see us at the Western North Carolina Fly Fishing Expo Friday and Saturday at the WNC Ag Center in Asheville. I will do fly tying and will have information about the Western North Carolina Fly Fishing Trail, trips that Blackrock Outdoors offers, and some small retail items. Stop by and say hi.

Thanksgiving week is upon us and I am thankful to be able to help people like you! We have several folks in town to fish over the next few days and the weather is not that bad for November. Cold mornings and 50's in the afternoon are normal and looks like it maybe Saturday or Sunday before any chance of rain in the area.
Stream flows are good for the most part. The Tuckasegee River in Jackson County is flowing at 60cfs this morning with Duke Energy generating from the West Fork only. Check our site for flow rates and schedule changes.

The heavy rain made it last evening. I had a reading of 1.25" of rain in the gauge this morning and still a bit of lite rain falling and fog at this time. After this system moves out we should be dry for the next ten days. Temps are looking good with highs in the 50's and 60's and some lows in the 20's.
According to the USGS, streams are swelled with all the rain and runoff. It will be a couple of days before some of the streams will be fishable. Remember park streams usually drop faster which makes them a good alternative.

The rain and wind is making it presence felt this morning with all us being under a flood watch until Thursday. Heavy rain is expected late this evening with eastern facing slopes forecast to receive up to 4 inches of rain. We will have to see what we get but it is not looking good. The one thing I can say is that it has certainly been mild which has allowed many to get out on the WNC Fly Fishing Trail in Jackson County.
After this front moves out I would suggest Scotts Creek, Caney Fork, and even the Trophy Section in Cherokee. Now it will take a few days for the Trophy Section water to recede but it has been fishing well and it is one of the fifteen spots on the WNC Fly Fishing Trail. Scotts Creek and Caney Fork should clear up the quickest but still check flows before entering. If in doubt stay out.

I have been on the water the last 3 days. I have fished DH water, hatchery supported water, and the GSMNP. We got fish in all the places mentioned above. Nymphs and dries worked in the GSMNP and nymphs on the DH and the hatchery supported water. The Tuckasegee is flowing in the mid 500'scfs so it's a technical wade but it is fishing well.
Scotts Creek fished well with some runs producing as many as 5 fish. The water flow was good and clear and no fishing pressure.
GSMNP was the slowest but it did produce fish. Expect to find the trout in the areas you normally wouldn't. Search out water with sun hitting it and shallow edges, that's where the fish action is. The water temps are cooling off and you can tell in the way they are hitting right now.

The cold weather is arriving with some wind this morning. It certainly feels more like November but we have had some great warm weather this month. Expect lows in the 30's and 20's depending on location and this will push the water temps down. Expect highs in the 50's for most of the weekend and wind so bundle up.
Duke Energy has scheduled East and West Fork generations for the next 72 hours and this is making the Tuckasegee flow very high. I have seen a few anglers trying to wade and some have came in with some stories of difficult wading at best. This is such a great fishery but we can't control the flow rate. We do however have 14 other great fisheries on the WNC Fly Fishing Trail so get out and wet a line.

I hope that all Veterans had a great day yesterday. I was able to sneak out a bit early and fish the Deep Creek area of the GSMNP and caught the slam yesterday afternoon. The water levels are a bit high but defiantly fishable. Seen lots of insect activity and the trout were eating. I took trout on a #10 UV Yellow Stimulator and a #16 Frenchie Nymph.
The DH section of the Tuckasegee River in Jackson County is still flowing at 833cfs this morning and Duke Energy is continuing to release from East and West Forks over the next 72 hours. This is making our DH section hard to fish unless you float it. With all this being said great fish are being caught and released now.
We have colder weather headed in with lows in the 30's and highs in the 50's coming in this weekend. Some forecast show lows in the teens but we will see what we get.

Rain, rain, rain please go away! Well the rain has stopped but the system certainly gave us large amounts of water with streams now flowing at very high levels which will put the fishing on hold for a few days. I received almost 2 inches of rain in my rain gauge with also other amounts being reported.
Wednesday looks like the best weather day of the week but if I was you and was looking to do some fishing I would seek out the smaller streams in the area. GSMNP streams should recede the quickest and they are fishing good. Dry flies and nymphs are working on local GSMNP streams.
DH waters were stocked last week but with Duke Energy releasing water on almost a 24 hours basis it has been difficult to fish these tailwaters and the last rain event is only compounding that. Float trips last week produced some really good fish on eggs and streamers. Eggs had to be fished deep to beat the current flow and some of the fish caught and released were full of eggs.

Another nice November morning with a nice sunrise but it looks like a weather system is heading our way with rain. The Jackson County DH section of the Tuck will be stocked today and this will conclude the stocking for the month of November.
The Tuck flows are still high with a current reading of 824cfs in Cullowhee this morning. Duke Energy is scheduled to release from East and West Forks from 12am until 11:59pm today. Check updated flows and times on the links from our webpage.
A great alternate place to fish would be the DH section of the Nantahala or as we call the Upper Nantahala. Good reports coming from this DH section of water and the best news is that it is fishable. Call the shop for directions or more information.

We have been blessed with a beautiful November morning. Perfect temps and skies and if I was not at the shop I would be in the GSMNP with a 3wt rod and a size 18 dry chasing some great mountain trout. It is best that I am here tying flies for those that can hit the water.
The Tuck in Jackson County is flowing at 814cfs and it is clear. Difficult wading to say the least but it is clearing up nicely. Another scheduled stocking date of Thursday will complete the November stocking for the Tuck DH section in Jackson County. Be sure to check our links for the latest stream flows and Duke release schedules.
If you are looking for an adventure try the Cataloochee Valley of the GSMNP in Haywood County. The stream flow is excellent and you should be able to land some browns and rainbows with stealth tactics. Elk will be active as well as other wildlife which makes this an even better adventure. Also going mid week allows you the beat the weekend elk watchers. Down size flies and tippets to increase your chances of success. I would start with #18 dries and adjust to the conditions. My box would have Parachute Adams, Caddis Flies, Stimulators, Midges, Wulffs, Pheasant Tail, Hares Ears, Girdle Bug, Woolly Bugger, Prince, and Secret Weapon Nymph.

Today is a scheduled stocking day for the DH section of the Tuckasegee River in Jackson County, home of the only Official Fly Fishing Trail. The Tuckasegee is flowing pretty well or as you can say, blowout. Duke is releasing water from both the East and West Forks until 11:59PM today. The Tuck is also dingy after the 2 inches of rain the past few days but the temps are very mild for November.
Small streams levels are up also. The Ravens Fork, Oconaluftee River, and other streams including but not limited to GSMNP streams are also at high levels. One can expect the GSMNP streams to calm down the quickest and be fishable first.
Call or email with questions and be sure to check current stream flow conditions on out site. Also if you are in town, the Tuckaseigee Chapter of TU will be meeting at 6pm this evening at United Community Bank meeting room. Please come and join us.

Happy Halloween everyone! Duke is playing tricks not treats with the stream flow schedule. Both East and West Forks are flowing which is making wading difficult at best for the experienced angler. Great time to float but not wade. Good news is the November 3rd and 5th are scheduled stocking days in Jackson County DH section of the Tuckasegee River. Some fresh trout with fresh lips will help the fishing and maybe give the others with sore lips a chance to recover.
Expect mostly cloudy skies today with highs in the lower 60's. Sunday we have a 60% chance of rain and 100% chance of rain Monday. We have had some great fall weather to this point and fishing has been good but eventually it will get cold.
I did have a trip in the GSMNP yesterday and we took trout on dries. Small dries worked best but client did land a nice trout on a woolly worm that I tie. It is a #10 dry pattern that works well this time of year with the worms crawling. We seen midge hatches as well as tiny BWO's. Leaves were not that bad but they are starting to come down at a quicker pace.
The last tournament of the season is taking place this weekend on the Trophy Section of Ravens Fork. It should fish good the next week as one would guess that they have stocked fresh stock as per previous tournaments.

Good Friday morning to all! Duke is generating on both East and West Forks which is making the stream flow on the Tuckasegee River very high. Please check flows before entering water and always use a staff.
Expect highs in the lower 60's and it is a bit foggy this morning. Stick with nymphs and you should have success. I'm not sure how the pressure will be this weekend since a tournament is taking place in Cherokee this weekend. Lot of guides like fishing those.
Drop us a line or call if you have any questions. I have a trip in the GSMNP this morning and I will update after I get back.

We have received over .5" of rain since yesterday and more is on the way. It is a light drizzle this morning and it would not keep me off the water. Expect highs in the 50's and occasional rain showers today. Wednesday we have an 80% of rain and highs in the 60's.
The Tuckasegee looked clear this morning and the stream flow is good. GSMNP is clear and flows are also good. I would stick with traditional nymphs and flies. Keep an eye on your surroundings and match what you see flying.

It is 2PM EST and we have received .10" of rain so far and more is expected the couple of days. Todays rain in the type of rain I like fishing in and have caught some great trout on the fly.
I had a chance to fish the Deep Creek up to the loop bridge and I have to tell you that it is fishing great. They trout are taking #18 Parachute Adams and Tiny Midge Patterns. I also talked with other guides and the general consensus is the same. Expect Caddis to hatch in afternoon so I recommend fishing mid day.
The DH waters are fishing good and it seems to be all over the place with what to use. I am selling everything from traditional patterns to crazy patterns. These stocked fish see everything drifted at them and they do two things, feed and rest so eventually they will eat your nymph/fly.
They are scheduled to stock the Tuckasegee River in Jackson County November 3rd and 5th.

Looks like we are in store for a nice weekend. We do however have a cold front approaching from the west and some rain that may be here by mid week so if you plan on fishing next week do it now.
Yesterday in the GSMNP we had good success on small dries. We actually did not take the first fish on nymphs. They certainly liked #18 size dries. Grey or black bodies will work well. Most fish activity is happening mid-day.

We have been blessed with another wonderful day. Temps will be perfect for fishing today and next few days going forward. Streams are clear and fish are eating.
Reports out of Hazel Creek of several fish caught on Pink Worms. Caddis are also hatching in the afternoons with Midge patterns also working.
The Upper Nantahala is fishing good. Expect to see many anglers at this poplar destination. One of guides had awesome success on a #12 Olive Deep Six Caddis.
The Tuckasegee is fishing good but it seems that several trout are being taken on traditional nymph patterns such as Hares Ear, Prince Nymph, and Pheasant Tail Nymphs to name a few. We have another frost this morning but we should reach the upper 60's today with clear skies. The water flows are good and the streams are clear.
I had an opportunity to fish in the GSMNP yesterday and it was a good day. It did start off a bit slow but it ended well. The water temp in the morning was 42 degrees. I did observe Caddis hatching around noon yesterday and that lasted into the afternoon hours. October and Tan Caddis were the main ones but a few Mayflies made a small presence. I really had a blast taking trout on a #18 Gallup's Gobber Midge, which was my most affective fly.
Another guide was on the Nantahala and had a good day also. They took most of the fish on a #12 Deep Six Caddis nymph. The guide said the fishing was good and the conditions were good.
I have not gotten a report from the Tuckasegee yet but I would guess that current trends will continue. Expect several anglers and drift boats on the water. Check stream flow rates and make sure you can wade safely before entering the Tuck.

We had our first frost of the fall at the house this morning with a temperature reading of a comfortable 32 degrees. I talked to many other shops yesterday about streams in WNC and the general consensus is that October Caddis, Tan Caddis, Pheasant Tails, Secret Weapon Nymphs, Girdle Bugs, and Hares Ear Nymphs will get some fish for you. Orange Stimulators and Autumn Palmers are an excellent choice for dry flies also. A few reports of Blue Winged Olives hatching have been reported so be sure to have a few in your box.
Water levels in non damn controlled waters are good. Leaves are changing and they will be peaking at higher elevations soon so being in the streams right now provides some excellent fishing and scenery.

Fall is in the air. I had a reading of 42 degrees at the house this morning but temperatures will vary a few degrees depending on location. The weatherman is calling for lows in the 30's by this weekend and highs in the 60's so hit the water for some great fall fishing action.
The Delayed Harvest Waters of the Tuckasegee River in Jackson County and Swain County are fishing well. Most of the fishing pressure in Jackson County is happening in the Webster area along South River Road. Expect to see both drift boats and wading fishermen alike. If you are heading to the new DH section in Swain County I suggest fishing in the Bryson City area of the Tuckasegee River. Reliable reports are saying that the most productive areas are in the town area.
The GSMNP is a great place to fish. October Caddis are hatching and if you like casting dry flies this is an excellent time to be in one of the many streams on the GSMNP. I suggest starting off early with an orange dry fly of your choice and later in the day switching to a dropper rig. Let the fish be your guide. Water levels are awesome and very clear but remember that you will have to contend with falling leaves but as a bonus wildlife are active and the scenery is beautiful.
The WNC Fly Fishing Trail has 15 excellent spots to hit. The trail includes everything from small streams, delayed harvest waters, and trophy waters to fish. Some local favorites include but are not limited to Scotts Creek and the Caney Fork and various other streams in that area. No matter what type of water you like to fish we have it hear in Jackson County and in the surrounding area. Click on the map located on our site for a larger version of the map.

If you are dead set on fishing DH water you will need some hi-vis flies. Usually white rubber legged patterns work good in these conditions.
I suggest hitting some smaller streams and find the clear water and you will find fish activity.

The brunt of the rain is to hit later this evening and last thru Sunday which will push our full streams over the edge. It will be interesting to see how long it takes the streams to get back to a safe fishing flow after this event.
Keep and eye on the weather before venturing out and be sure to check our link for current stream flows and generation schedules.

Well we off to a wet start this month with rainfall totals forecast to be record amounts. Streams are blown out and they are going to remain that way as rain continues to fall over the next few days.
My tip is to stop into the shop and hangout. Take this time to get ready for when the weather breaks.

The storm track that Hurricane Joaquin takes will greatly impact the amount of rainfall we will get in Western North Carolina the next few days. Various amounts of rainfall have been forecast but we will have to see what track Joaquin takes.
Delayed Harvest Trout Waters open today: The NC Wildlife Resources Commission will implement delayed harvest regulations on 36 trout waters in 19 Western North Carolina counties on October 1.
Under delayed harvest regulations no trout can be harvested or possessed from these waters between October 1 and one half-hour after sunset June 3, 2016. No natural bait may be possessed, and anglers can fish only with artificial lures with one single hook. An artificial lure is defined as a fishing lure that neither contains nor has been treated with any substance that attracts fish by the sense of taste or smell.
The Wildlife Commission stocks delayed harvest trout waters from fall through spring with high densities of trout to increase anglers chances of catching fish. Delayed harvest trout waters , posted with diamond shaped, black and white signs are popular fishing destinations for anglers who enjoy catch-and-release trout fishing.
For a complete list of delayed harvest trout waters, stocking dates, information on delayed harvest regulations and trout fishing maps, visit the Commission's trout fishing page at www.ncwildlife.org

Wow it is like Jekyll and Hyde when it comes to rain. More rain hit the region yesterday with an official reading of .79 inches in Sylva but larger amounts up to 1.5 inches have been reported. More rain is in the forecast today so keep an eye on the sky if your are heading to a stream.
USGS stream readings are showing many streams at above normal flow conditions. Expect swift water and dingy water conditions today. Wade with extreme caution and use a wading staff.

Nymphs: Inchworm, Brown Stone Patterns, Black Stone Patterns, Girdle Bugs, Secret Weapon Nymph, Pheasant Tail, BWO Emergers, Wooly Buggers

Rain, rain, and more rain. With rainfall amounts approaching 7-8 inches below normal this rain is a welcome site. Rainfall amounts of up to 2 inches are in the forecast today but streams still have a ways to go before reaching normal levels. The rain should also help cool the water a bit.
My advice is to stay in and prepare for a great fall season of trout fishing in the mountains. If you venture out expect dingy and higher water conditions. Be safe and use a wading staff.

Water levels are still low which is making the fishing somewhat challenging at best. We are getting reports in the shop that higher elevation trout are not seeing as many flies and nymphs drifted in the feeding lanes. My advice is to hit the high road and find the coldest water and you will find the trout.
Dry fly selection should include but not limited to the following: Midge Patterns, Blue Winged Olives, Light Cahill, Elk Hair Caddis, Peacock Caddis, Orange Palmer, Stimulators, Charlie Whopper, Orange Snipe.
