Wow it is like Jekyll and Hyde when it comes to rain. More rain hit the region yesterday with an official reading of .79 inches in Sylva but larger amounts up to 1.5 inches have been reported. More rain is in the forecast today so keep an eye on the sky if your are heading to a stream.
USGS stream readings are showing many streams at above normal flow conditions. Expect swift water and dingy water conditions today. Wade with extreme caution and use a wading staff.
Dry Fly Patterns: October Caddis, Blue Winged Olives, Cream Midge, Royal Wulff, Royal Coachman, Red Humphy, Orange Stimulator, Autumn Palmer, Orange Never Sink Caddis
Nymphs: Inchworm, Brown Stone Patterns, Black Stone Patterns, Girdle Bugs, Secret Weapon Nymph, Pheasant Tail, BWO Emergers, Wooly Buggers

Rain, rain, and more rain. With rainfall amounts approaching 7-8 inches below normal this rain is a welcome site. Rainfall amounts of up to 2 inches are in the forecast today but streams still have a ways to go before reaching normal levels. The rain should also help cool the water a bit.
My advice is to stay in and prepare for a great fall season of trout fishing in the mountains. If you venture out expect dingy and higher water conditions. Be safe and use a wading staff.

Water levels are still low which is making the fishing somewhat challenging at best. We are getting reports in the shop that higher elevation trout are not seeing as many flies and nymphs drifted in the feeding lanes. My advice is to hit the high road and find the coldest water and you will find the trout.
