NC Wildlife will be stocking the Tuckasegee DH water in Jackson County will be stocked March 2nd! I am expecting a good amount of anglers to take advantage of this. Nest week WCU and our county school system is on spring break so college pressure should be less.
We are still mild for this time of year. Duke has been releasing some water but it is erratic schedule at best. BE sure to check the link on our website for the schedule and flow rates.

We are in the midst of an early spring weather pattern and I hope it brings some rain soon. We are around 19" below where we should be and most of that stems from last year. It is affecting how Duke is managing stream flows on the tail waters.
For the good news the Tuckasegee DH in Jackson County will be stocked March 2nd! The staff from the Setzer Hatchery will be over with plenty of Rainbow, Brown, and non-native Brook Trout for everyone to pick on.
We have been some pretty nice hatches on the Tuck. Last evening my Smith Optics were covered by Olive Caddis as they enjoy adulthood in February. The strange thing was that I had no success on emergers for caddis at all. All of mu success came on a white woolly bugger. They hit it very aggressively and i have to admit it was the last change that I made. The water flow was up but receding and the color was a bit stained.
We are getting some tiny black stones, BWO's, and caddis hatches on a daily basis. Pheasant Tails have been working well and even some egg patterns have produced some good fish.

Looks like a lovely day outside. I have been under the weather and have not been able to take advantage of the summer like weather this past weekend. I did see some photos of some nice trout and small mouth bass that was landed and released on the Tuckasegee this weekend.
We should cool off the next few days but another warm up is headed our way. This is making for some nice fishing on our tail waters. The waters in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park are still a bit colder than the tail waters thus making that fishing environment a bit slower than the tail waters.
Typical stone fly nymphs are working well but don't overlook the importance of some tiny dry flies. Black, grey, or even olive midge patterns can produce a top water take. Tiny Caddis are hatching as well as some Blue Winged Olives.

Changes are coming as I type. It is 7:30 pm and we just had a thunder storm and the cold air is headed our way. The crazy thing is that we will be in the upper 60's by the end of the weekend. Thursday on the other hand will be cold, brrrr.
The fishing has been good and I expect it to tail of a bit until this weather passes. The weekend can be an excellent time to fish if you have a chance. I will keep you posted on water levels and release schedules as they change.

Looks like another fantastic week in early February! Slight chances of rain will dominate the forecast with mild temperatures reminding us of why we love spring so much. I certainly recommend hitting the water or trail this week and take advantage of the mild weather.
I had a chance to float a section of the Tuckasegee yesterday with some success. We landed some nice trout and seen some larger ones lurking deep but not interested in the many offerings drifted in front of them.
We watched skidding caddis getting eating by a rising trout on the river edges but most activity for us was subsurface.
Be prepared for anything, dries, midges, nymphs, and some smaller streamers. Water levels are good for wading but a bit low for floating some areas. We can still do a float trip if you want in certain areas of the Tuckasegee. This is also a great time for a wade trip if you are interested.

Duke Energy is scheduled to release from the West Fork Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and if they stick to that schedule wading will be good. Always double check on our website before hitting the water. Its going to be a cooler weekend with a chance of some flurries.
Stick with some stonefly nymphs, girdle bugs, and some woolly buggers. A few emergers and soft hackles should complete your selection. Work feeding lanes to increase your odds of a hook up.
